A detailed description from the perspective of a first year student.
This article exclusively explores why choosing DU over lower NITs is a compelling option.
Below, I’ve outlined the key factors that influenced my decision and what makes DU stand out, something you won’t find anywhere else.
My Journey:
Hello dear reader, I am Ritesh Gupta – a first year MCA student from the University of Delhi, an esteemed institution in our country renowned for its MCA program.
I began my journey in June 2022 from Maarula Classes, which is in no doubts,
THE BEST LEADING INSTITUTE FOR MCA ENTRANCE EXAMS IN INDIA.
Like almost every other aspirant, I was only aware of NIMCET and NIT MCA. After joining Maarula classes, I got to know about central universities offering the MCA course for a duration of 2 years and also the attractive fee structure. Here at Maarula classes, I got an environment where I could study for the whole day undisturbed and also got the support that I needed.
Director Amit sir, is a great teacher and better than that a great person. His availability for the students at all times is something much appreciated and not seen in all the teachers.
All the topics taught by him are thorough and stay in your mind till the end.
The practice sheets and tests have proven more than enough to me for preparation.
I had given all the entrance exams namely – NIMCET, CUET, JMIEE, KIITEE, CET MAH, and was able to get shortlisted in all of them but I chose DU because of various points that I have discussed below:
- Course Duration:
The course duration was the most important factor for me to choose DU. Here, the MCA programme spans 2 years of which only 3 semesters are dedicated to studies and the last one is work experience/project. Which means that you get an upper hand on those who are pursuing the same course for 3 years.
However this might not be suitable for non cs students. But for CS students, this might prove to be the right choice.
- Low Fee:
The fee here is unimaginably low here, considering the scale of the university. Which is also a driving criteria for studying here.
- Location:
The University of Delhi is located in the capital of the country India, as the name itself gives it away. The connectivity with all the parts of the country is actually a point worth considering. You can almost anytime get a ride home.
- Placement Record/Alumni Association:
The placement record here in DU marks almost 95% – 99% of the batch with most of the jobs coming in for SDE and Data Science roles in reputed companies – list here.
The Annual Alumni Meet marks attendance of a huge number of alumni from the institution, so the students get networking opportunities.
Since the batch size is very low: 60 – 70 seats per batch, and the only competition are a few Msc CS students, almost everyone gets a placement by the end of 3rd semester itself.
Above mentioned were some of the reasons that I chose DU over other colleges. Now, I would like to discuss my experiences that I’ve had in the past 4 months studying here:
- Awesome faculty:
The faculty here are young and passionate professors with extensive knowledge for the students to acquire. The young age of the teachers makes the lectures interesting (of course there are exceptions). The teachers encourage peer learning and modern thoughts.
- Senior support:
The seniors here are very friendly and supportive. From day 1, they try to make you feel at home. Always available to solve all of your problems – be it academic or personal, they’ll try to solve all of them. And this is not a batch thing, it is more of a culture here. Something much appreciated.
- Competitive Peers:
Here, your batchmates are really competitive with all great minds coming in. They inspire you to always put in more effort than you are currently giving. You won’t feel bored or like, “Where have I come? Noone’s serious here”. Everybody is dead serious about their studies here.
- Events in DUCS:
Although there are no fests like IITs and NITs here, we get our fair serve of events and fests to keep us engaged. Almost all major festivals are marked with departmental celebrations such as – Diwali Party, Holi Party, Christmas Eve, etc. Delhi means DJ. Dancing with your friends in the department on desi beats is pure bliss✨.
Sankalan, the annual tech fest is something to look forward to. Marked with many tech competitions and cultural shows, it is a purely awesome event!
- Departmental Elections:
Departmental Elections for the Student Panel of DUCS Student Society are held each year and the voting is done by the students of all batches from MCA and MSC CS.
Placement Coordinators are also elected in a similar manner.
This way you actually get a chance to give something to the community.
- Greenery:
The campus is filled with flora and fauna of several kinds giving it a very cool and fresh feel. It’s not just another rocky campus.
- Canteens and cafeterias:
In almost every part of the campus, you will find at least one canteen nearby to put a stop to your hungry crying belly.
Since I have now talked about why this institution is so good, it is my duty to also tell you what could be the turn down points for you:
- Lower number of hostels:
Increased number of students and less area in the Northern area of Delhi result in a lesser number of hostels for masters students since most of the space goes away to the bachelors students. Although this is bound to change once the seniors from the 2020 batch pass out, who had a 3 year MCA course.
So, you have to rely on PGs and rental rooms, which kind of increase the cost of living. Although if you manage to find a sharing flat, it considerably brings down the costs and in turn gives you the “adult feel”.
- Smaller area:
Although the campus is large enough to accommodate several unused buildings and parks, it lacks in terms of area for our beloved DUCS department which has to be shared among MCA MSC and PhD students. As the seniors jokingly refer to it as – “dedh floor ka pyara sa department”. Although the size is small, the lab machines are top notch.
Since it has been only a few months of me studying here, these are the experiences that I’ve had. I promise to update this article from time to time and make sure that my juniors make the right choice.
Thanks for reading. ✌🏻
