A thorough explanation from the viewpoint of a first year student.
Hello, reader! I am Nitin Kant , a first-year student enrolled in the MCA program at Jamia Millia
Islamia University .
JMI is a well known institution in India with a visionary mission of “Building a secular and modern
system of integrated education for sustainable development of society .”
This article is about : Why should we go for JMI over lower NIT’s .
I will address some factors further in the article , but before that, I want to give a brief recounting of
my journey to Jamia .
My journey to JMI :
In the last year of my bachelor’s program, I began my preparation journey for MCA entrance exams
from Maarula Classes , Kanpur .
Now , It’s safe to say that choosing Maarula Classes was an outstanding decision . Maarula classes
provided a conducive environment for learning and practicing and credit goes to director , Mr. Amit
Katiyar , an enthusiastic teacher, an encouraging mentor, and, above all, a sympathetic person always
there for every student .
Now , let’s move on to the factors/reasons why I chose JMI .
- Low Fee :
This was the most crucial factor for me, coming from a middle class family . The fee which Jamia
offers is affordable for anyone . Total cost of the 2 year MCA program is around 17,000 rupees. - Course Duration :
The MCA program at JMI is a 2 year course , in which the classes are held in the first 3 semesters
and the 4th or final semester is dedicated to a Major project . This was a plus point for me as a CS
student . If you are a non CS student , the duration of the course might be a concern for you . - Multiple Scholarships :
Various scholarships programs are available for which you can apply for and receive repayment to
cover your tuition fees. - Placement Record :
The placement record at Jamia is around 70-75% per batch, with an average CTC of around 8
LPA which is decent. The batch size varies between 40-50 students, with some getting placed off
campus and some go for research . - Location :
Jamia Millia Islamia is located in the heart of India’s capital, New Delhi, providing students with
a unique opportunity of internships and industry exposure. The city offers easy access to resources .
Now , I want to share my experience in Jamia that I have felt in the last 3 months of
studying in here : - Infrastructure & Greenery :
Jamia has a great and straightforward infrastructure . The large/spacious classrooms of the
computer application department are equipped with projectors, facilitating better interaction with
teachers .
The greenery at Jamia creates a surroundings where every time you stroll around the college , you
experience a pleasant fragrance and aroma . - Events :
There are multiple student clubs that organize a variety of events, encompassing both technical and
cultural genres. Additionally, motivational talks are also conducted. - Senior support :
You don’t have to approach seniors , they themselves reach out to you , addressing your queries and
providing comprehensive information. Whether it’s related to Previous Year Questions (PYQs),
placement queries, or concerns about a specific teacher’s grading criteria . - Canteens and cafeterias :
The campus is extensive , containing numerous canteens and cafeterias . The food quality is
commendable/good , and there are several dry canteens offering a variety of fast food items. Their
prices are also cheap. - Excellent Faculty :
The teachers are highly qualified and exceptionally skilled, with years of experience . The teaching
styles of the teachers are very good, they provide multiple examples for every topic , making
understanding very comfortable. Yes, some exceptions exist everywhere.
Now , I want to share some points of disapprovement, which you have the right to know
from my perspective : - No separate canteens for Vegetarians:
The number of canteens and cafeterias in Jamia is large. However, one thing that you will find
there is no separate canteens for vegetarian students, you have to eat on the same premises as
non-vegetarian students. This is something which you have to compromise with throughout your
study. - Limited number of hostels :
The number of hostels in Jamia is very low. If you apply for a hostel, there’s very less chance that it
will be allotted to you . Therefore, you have to opt for PGs, which makes your cost of living more
expensive or you can seek shared flats near by college . The nearby areas of Jamia are very crowded.
